Here at RJP Audio Overhaul, we often get asked about re-capping hifi equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a few factors to take into consideration when performing a re-cap. How physically accessible are the capacitors? Are the capacitor values still available? Are any specialized capacitors required?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far we’ve found as a rule that most re-capping jobs take around the three hour mark to perform. This does not always cover calibration and testing which need to be performed afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard to get capacitors are generally large reservoir versions in units power supplies. But as these capacitors have a longer shelf life than smaller ones, we tend to only source and change them if absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other specialized capacitors are axial and bipolar types. Values of which tend to be few and far between and of a much larger cost, especially the axial versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing to also bear in mind is that virtually all modern capacitors are physically smaller than yester years versions due to improvements in build and technology techniques. These improvements also mean that lesser known \/ generic brands are probably just as good performance wise as the big name branded capacitors from twenty years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
